Snorkeling Safety

Even though snorkeling is a very safe sport, there are a few things you can do to protect yourself against injuries and danger. Before we go over this list, always go snorkeling with a buddy.

1. Use a snorkeling Vest. As mentioned earlier, always take a snorkeling vest with you. That way, you will always have something besides your own muscles to help keep you afloat. In light of physical fatigue, changing weather conditions, and unseen water currents, a vest is a very wise investment.

2. Respect the surrounding marine life. There are several good reasons to be respectful of the marine life you encounter during snorkeling trips. First, being respectful will help preserve the underwater world for future recreation opportunities and it can help protect you as well. For example, some fish will only become aggressive if they feel threatened by meddling and some corals have been known to cut or burn divers that come in contact with them. Enjoy what you see, but be wary of handling the treasures of the sea. 3. Do not snorkel alone. Snorkeling is not only safer when you go with a buddy, but more fun as well.

4. Be aware of your surroundings. This includes everything from the oceanography, tide schedules, currents, weather, and water traffic. It can be easy to get wrapped up in the beauty beneath the surface, but you have to be aware of your extended surroundings too.

5. Use exposure protection. At the very least, everyone should carry and use sunscreen during snorkeling excursions to protect them from sun burn. Wetsuits, gloves and water shoes can also be useful exposure protection if you are swimming in cold waters.

6. Don't wear jewelry. In addition to getting in the way, jewelry can become lost during snorkeling trips or act as fish lures.

7. Know your physical limits. If you are getting tired, don't keep going because you are having such a wonderful time in the water. Listen to your body and respond to sign of fatigue.

8. Know what you're doing. Review the basics of snorkeling equipment and technique before every jumping in the water.
